Sleep disorder symptoms include:
- Snoring
- Gasping for air
- High Blood Pressure
- Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
- “Creepy – crawly” feeling in the legs when resting
- Any unusual activity that disturbs your sleep or your partner’s sleep
What can I expect during my visit?
There is nothing to fear while taking part
in a sleep study. When you arrive at Comprehensive Sleep Solutions,
one hour prior to your regular bedtime, you will be greeted by a
specially trained sleep technician. He or she will show you to
your bedroom, where you should have no trouble feeling comfortable
and at home. Once you are settled in and ready to begin the
study, the sleep technician will attach sensors to various
areas of your skin with a special paste and tape application. You
are free to watch television, read or just relax prior to
falling asleep.
How do I prepare for my visit?
On the day of your sleep study:
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol about 8 hours prior to the study.
- Do not take any naps or “sleep in” later than usual.
- Try to follow your normal routine (no excessive exercise, stress, eating etc.)
- Take a shower, but do not use any lotion or hair gel.
- Take your regular medication as directed by your physician.
- Bring something comfortable to sleep in.
- You may bring your own pillow, reading material, or anything else that will make your feel more at home.
- If you are feeling ill or have unusual circumstances, please call Comprehensive Sleep Solutions to discuss whether we should proceed with the study or reschedule.
Why should I consider a sleep study?
The National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research found that 40
million Americans are chronically ill with various sleep
disorders. If not treated, a sleep disorder could lead to:
- Heart attacks
- Strokes
- Auto or machinery accident
- Problems at home or work
Most sleep disorders are easily treated and can greatly improve your
quality of life. The sleep test or polysomnography is usually covered
by health insurance as an outpatient procedure and is completed with
an overnight stay in the sleep lab.
If you believe you may have a sleep disorder, you should
discuss the problem with your doctor and be referred to Comprehensive
Sleep Solutions for testing.
